If you’re already working on roofs, you might have years of experience but no formal qualification to prove what you can do.

A roofing NVQ gives you recognised proof of your skills without having to go back to college. Instead of learning the trade from scratch, you’re assessed on the roofing work you already carry out.

But should you choose a Roofing NVQ Level 2 or Level 3? The answer depends on your experience, the type of roofing work you do and the qualification pathway that matches your role.

This guide explains the differences, what evidence you’ll need, how workplace assessment works and how to choose the right roofing qualification.

Roofing NVQ Level 2 vs Level 3: What’s the Difference?

Both qualifications recognise roofing skills through workplace assessment, but they cover different levels of competence.

Level 2 is generally for roofers carrying out standard slating and tiling work. Level 3 is aimed at experienced roofers who can demonstrate more advanced trade skills, including complex roof details and specialist installation work.

Roofing NVQ Level 2: Who Is It For?

A Roofing Level 2 NVQ is suitable for people who already carry out roof slating, roof tiling or a combination of both as part of their normal work.

You may be suitable for this qualification if you:

  • Regularly install roof tiles or slates
  • Work with underlay, battens and roofing components
  • Carry out roof coverings to standard roof details
  • Follow roofing specifications and safe working procedures
  • Have practical roofing experience but no recognised qualification

The Level 2 NVQ in Roofing Occupations has three pathways: Roof Tiler, Roof Slater, and Roof Slater and Tiler. Your chosen pathway should match the roofing work you actually carry out.

If you mainly install felt, single-ply membranes or other waterproof roofing systems, a different roofing qualification may be more suitable.

Completing the appropriate Level 2 Roofing NVQ can help you meet the qualification requirement for a Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card, subject to the other CSCS requirements.

Roofing NVQ Level 3: Who Is It For?

A Roofing NVQ Level 3 is designed for experienced roofers who already carry out advanced slating or tiling work.

It isn’t simply a qualification for people who supervise other roofers. Level 3 Roofing Occupations focuses on advanced trade competence, including more complex roofing techniques.

Depending on your chosen pathway, this could include:

  • Installing roof coverings to complex roof details
  • Working with curved, swept, mitred or vertical roof details
  • Installing specialist natural slate roof coverings
  • Working from detailed roofing specifications
  • Carrying out advanced roofing tasks safely and to the required standard

Like Level 2, the qualification includes Roof Tiler, Roof Slater, and Roof Slater and Tiler pathways.

You don’t necessarily need to supervise a team to achieve Level 3. What matters is that you carry out suitable advanced roofing work and can provide evidence of your competence.

If your main responsibility is supervising workers rather than carrying out advanced roofing tasks, an occupational supervision qualification may be more appropriate.

What Is a Roofing NVQ?

A roofing NVQ is a workplace-based qualification that recognises the skills and knowledge you use in your job.

Unlike a traditional training course, you don’t need to attend college regularly to learn how to roof. Instead, an assessor checks that you can carry out the work required for your chosen qualification.

The assessment is designed to confirm that you can:

  • Carry out roofing tasks safely
  • Work to the required standards
  • Use the correct methods, materials and equipment
  • Explain the work you are doing and why
  • Demonstrate the practical skills required for your roofing pathway

If you’ve already been roofing for several years, you may have much of the experience needed. Your assessor will help you identify what evidence you can provide and whether your normal work covers the qualification requirements.

Roofing NVQ Courses: What Evidence Do You Need?

One of the most common questions about roofing NVQ courses is what evidence you need to provide.

Because the qualification is assessed through real workplace activity, your assessor needs proof that you can carry out the required roofing tasks competently.

Your roofing NVQ evidence may include:

  • Photographs of you carrying out roofing work
  • Photos showing different stages of an installation
  • Evidence of the roof slating or tiling tasks you complete
  • Workplace observations carried out by your assessor
  • Professional discussions about the methods and materials you use
  • Job sheets, work records or other relevant site paperwork
  • Evidence of safe working practices, including suitable access and fall protection
  • Witness testimony from a supervisor or another suitable person, where appropriate

The evidence must relate to your chosen qualification and the work you personally carry out.

For example, if you’re completing a Roof Slater and Tiler pathway, you’ll need suitable evidence covering the relevant slating and tiling requirements.

You don’t have to work everything out yourself. Your assessor will explain what is needed and help you identify opportunities to collect evidence while you continue working.

NVQ Level 2 Roofing Courses: How Does On-Site Assessment Work?

If you’re looking at NVQ Level 2 roofing courses, you might be wondering how the assessment fits around your working day.

The process is designed for people who are already working in roofing, so you can continue with your normal jobs while completing the qualification.

Assessment generally involves the following stages:

  • Initial assessment: Your assessor checks your experience, job role and the roofing work you carry out.
  • Choosing your pathway: You’ll be matched to the qualification pathway that reflects your work.
  • Collecting evidence: You’ll gather relevant workplace evidence, with guidance from your assessor.
  • Workplace assessment: Your assessor observes your work and may ask questions about the tasks you complete.
  • Completing your portfolio: Your evidence is checked against the qualification requirements.

You don’t normally need to attend regular classroom sessions or sit traditional written examinations. The assessment is based on demonstrating your competence in the workplace.

The same general approach applies to Level 3, although the evidence must demonstrate the more advanced skills required by that qualification.

Roofing NVQ Level 3: What Gets Assessed at a Higher Level?

The main difference at Level 3 is the complexity of the roofing work being assessed.

Where Level 2 focuses on competence in standard roofing activities, Level 3 requires evidence of advanced roofing techniques that match your chosen pathway.

Depending on your pathway, your assessor may need evidence of:

  • Installing roof tiles or slates to more complex details
  • Working with specialist roofing materials and installation methods
  • Completing curved, swept, mitred or vertical roof details
  • Interpreting specifications for advanced roofing work
  • Checking the quality and accuracy of completed work
  • Using safe working methods when carrying out complex tasks

The exact evidence depends on the qualification units and pathway you are completing.

Level 3 is not automatically about leading a team. An experienced roofer who carries out advanced slating or tiling work may be suitable even if they do not have supervisory responsibilities.

How Long Does a Roofing NVQ Take?

There isn’t one fixed timescale for every roofing NVQ.

How long it takes depends on your experience, the qualification requirements and how quickly you can gather the necessary workplace evidence.

Factors that can affect completion include:

  • The range of roofing tasks available in your normal work
  • Whether your current projects cover the required qualification units
  • How quickly workplace observations can be arranged
  • The evidence you’ve already collected
  • Any gaps that need to be addressed before assessment can be completed

For example, if your chosen pathway requires evidence of specific roof details, you may need to wait until you’re working on a suitable project.

Your assessor will discuss the expected timescale with you and help you plan how to gather the necessary evidence.

Do You Need a Roofing NVQ for a CSCS Card?

If you work on construction sites, you may need a roofing qualification to meet the requirements for the CSCS card associated with your occupation.

However, the card you can apply for depends on your roofing role and the qualification you hold.

The main routes to understand are:

  • Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card: An appropriate Level 2 Roofing NVQ can meet the qualification requirement for relevant roofing occupations.
  • Gold CSCS Skilled Worker card: Certain advanced roofing occupations may qualify through an appropriate Level 3 NVQ pathway. Eligibility depends on the occupation and qualification.
  • Gold CSCS Supervisor card: This is a separate route for people carrying out supervisory duties and normally requires an appropriate supervisory qualification.

Completing a roofing NVQ doesn’t automatically mean you’ll receive a CSCS card. You’ll also need to meet the relevant CSCS requirements, including the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

Roofing Qualification Options: How Do You Choose the Right Level?

The best roofing NVQ for you depends on the work you’re already doing, rather than simply how long you’ve worked in the trade.

Choose Roofing NVQ Level 2 If:

Level 2 could be the right qualification if you carry out standard roof slating or tiling work and want recognised proof of your skills.

  • You regularly fit roof tiles or slates
  • You work on standard roofing installations
  • You have relevant practical experience but no formal roofing qualification
  • You want to work towards the appropriate Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card

Choose Roofing NVQ Level 3 If:

Level 3 may be more suitable if you are an experienced roofer carrying out advanced slating or tiling tasks.

  • You regularly work on complex roofing details
  • You have experience with advanced installation techniques
  • Your work involves specialist roof slating or tiling activities
  • You can provide workplace evidence of the advanced skills required for your pathway

Roofing NVQ and Funding: Can It Be Government Funded?

Funding may be available for some roofing NVQ qualifications, depending on your circumstances, employer and the particular qualification.

Possible routes to investigate include eligible government-funded adult skills programmes, apprenticeship funding where applicable, employer-funded training and relevant CITB grants for eligible registered employers.

Availability and eligibility vary, and not every roofing NVQ or assessment route will qualify for support.

Train 4 Growth does not provide funding directly. However, we can discuss your training requirements and help you understand which funding routes may be worth checking.
