Already got SMSTS and wondering if you need a Level 6 NVQ as well?

Here is the short answer: SMSTS and the Level 6 NVQ do different jobs. SMSTS gives you training in managing health and safety on site. The NVQ checks whether you can do the work of a site manager.

You may need both, but having SMSTS does not automatically mean you must take an NVQ. It depends on your role, what your employer asks for and whether you want a Black CSCS Manager card.

SMSTS vs Level 6 NVQ: What Is the Difference?

SMSTS is a five-day course for people who manage, or are about to manage, work on site. It covers safety law, risks and your responsibilities as a manager. The certificate lasts five years.

The Level 6 NVQ in Construction Site Management is for people already managing sites. It checks the work you do: planning jobs, managing people, checking progress and dealing with problems.

Put simply, SMSTS teaches you about managing site safety. The NVQ assesses how you manage a site in practice.

Do I Need a Level 6 NVQ If I Already Have SMSTS?

Not just because you have SMSTS.

If your employer asks for a current SMSTS certificate, an NVQ will not replace it. But if you need a recognised qualification for the site management work you already do, the Level 6 NVQ may be the right next step.

Does SMSTS Get You a Black CSCS Card?

No. CSCS says SMSTS is not accepted as a qualification for a CSCS card.

For a Black CSCS Manager card, you need a relevant construction management or technical NVQ at Level 4, 5, 6 or 7. You also need to pass the CITB Managers and Professionals health and safety test.

The qualification must match your job. A Level 6 Site Management NVQ can meet the qualification requirement for certain site manager roles, but it does not guarantee a Black card. Already have another accepted qualification? You may not need a Level 6 NVQ. Check the CSCS Card Finder for your role before enrolling.

Can I Start the Level 6 NVQ Without SMSTS?

Yes. SMSTS is not an entry requirement for Train 4 Growth’s Level 6 Site Management NVQ. There is no set order for doing the two.

What matters for the NVQ is your current job. You need to be managing site work and able to show evidence of your decisions and responsibilities.

Can I Complete the Level 6 NVQ While Working?

Yes. There are no classroom days or written exams on Train 4 Growth’s Level 6 Site Management NVQ.

You use evidence from your normal work, such as site records and plans. Your assessor may also watch you work and talk through what you do. Most learners complete it in 9 to 18 months, depending on their role and the evidence they can gather.

What If I Need a CSCS Card Before Finishing My NVQ?

You may qualify for a temporary Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager card while completing an approved qualification.

You must meet its experience, registration and health and safety test rules. The card lasts three years and cannot be renewed. Having SMSTS alone does not make you eligible.

Is a Level 6 NVQ Right for My Site Management Job?

The Level 6 Site Management NVQ is for people who run site work, manage people and make decisions about progress, quality and safety. If you supervise a team but do not manage a site, check which qualification fits your role before signing up.

Do I Still Need to Renew SMSTS After Getting the NVQ?

If you need to keep your SMSTS certification current, yes. The NVQ does not renew your SMSTS certificate. Take the SMSTS refresher before your certificate expires. If it has expired, you will need to take the full course again.
