In 2026, a CSCS card costs £36. In most cases, you will also need to pass the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, which costs £23.50. The qualification you need will depend on your job and the type of card you are applying for.

What is a CSCS Card?

A CSCS card helps employers and site managers check that you have the appropriate qualifications and health and safety knowledge for the job you do on site. Your card shows details including your occupation, qualifications and expiry date, and can be accessed digitally through the My CSCS app as well as in physical form.

The type of card you need depends on your occupation, qualifications and level of responsibility. For example, skilled workers, supervisors and managers have different card requirements.

Many skilled CSCS cards require a recognised construction-related NVQ or equivalent qualification, although other approved qualifications and routes are accepted for certain cards. You will normally also need to pass the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment test or an approved alternative.

Types of CSCS Cards

Not all CSCS cards are the same. Choosing the right one depends on your qualifications and the role you’re applying for.

How to Apply for a CSCS Card

Applying for a CSCS card is straightforward, but the exact requirements depend on your occupation and the type of card you need. Here’s the basic process:

  1. Check Which CSCS Card You Need
    • Use the official CSCS Card Finder to check the right card for your occupation.
    • Make sure you hold, or are working towards where permitted, the qualification required for that card.
  2. Pass the Appropriate CITB Test
    • Most applicants need to pass the appropriate CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test, or an approved alternative.
    • The CITB HS&E Test currently costs £23.50 and lasts 45 minutes.
    • Your test normally needs to have been passed within the last two years when you apply.
  3. Prepare Your Evidence
    • Have a digital copy or clear photo of your qualification certificate, proof of registration where applicable, or other evidence required for your card.
    • Have your CITB HS&E Test ID number or details of your approved alternative ready.
  4. Submit Your CSCS Card Application
    • Individual applicants can apply through the official My CSCS service.
    • The standard CSCS card application fee is £36. The Apprentice card is issued free of charge.

The CSCS Test: What You Need to Know

The CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test, often referred to as the “CSCS test”, checks your knowledge of health, safety and environmental issues in construction. The test you need depends on your occupation and the CSCS card you are applying for.

There are three main types of CITB HS&E Test: Operatives, Specialists, and Managers and Professionals.

  • Questions: 50 multiple-choice questions.
  • Duration: 45 minutes.
  • Pass mark: 45 out of 50 (90%).
  • Cost: £23.50 when booked directly through CITB.

How Much Does a CSCS Card Cost in 2026?

A standard CSCS card costs £36 when you apply directly through the official CSCS service. Most applicants also need to pass the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test, which costs £23.50.

This does not include the cost of any NVQ, training or qualification you may need before you can apply for your card. The Apprentice card is currently issued free of charge.

CSCS Card Renewal & Replacement Costs

If your card can be renewed, the standard CSCS card fee is £36. You should check the current requirements for your occupation before renewing, as you may need a different card if your role or qualifications have changed.

  • Renewal: £36 where the card is eligible for renewal
  • Replacement card: £36

A replacement card keeps the expiry date of the original card.

Renewal and Replacement

The expiry date of your CSCS card depends on the type of card you hold. Many skilled worker, supervisor and manager cards are valid for five years, while temporary and some other cards have shorter validity periods.

Before renewing, check that your current card still matches your occupation and that you meet the latest qualification and health and safety test requirements.

  1. Check your card and occupation to make sure you are renewing the correct CSCS card.
  2. Pass the appropriate CITB HS&E Test or approved alternative if required. Your test will normally need to have been passed within the previous two years.
  3. Apply through My CSCS as an individual cardholder. Employers, training providers and third parties can use CSCS Online.

If your card is lost, stolen or damaged, you can order a replacement through My CSCS. Replacement cards currently cost £36 and keep the expiry date of the original card.

CSCS Card Checker

Employers and site managers should check CSCS cards using CSCS Smart Check. It is the official platform for verifying cards displaying the CSCS logo.

CSCS Smart Check can be used to confirm:

  • The cardholder’s name and registration details.
  • That the card is genuine and currently valid.
  • The card type and occupation.
  • The qualifications recorded against the card.
  • The card’s expiry date.

CSCS Card FAQs
