Roofing NVQ Level 2 – Course Overview

The Roofing NVQ Level 2 is a workplace-based qualification for people carrying out roof slating and tiling work on site.

It is suitable for roofers who install tiles, slates or both and want a recognised qualification that proves their competence. You do not need to leave work to attend college, as assessment is based on the roofing work you already carry out.

The qualification has three pathways:

  • Roof Tiler
  • Roof Slater
  • Roof Slater and Tiler

You will need access to suitable roofing work so that you can provide evidence and demonstrate the practical skills required for your chosen pathway.

Completing the appropriate Level 2 Roofing Occupations pathway can meet the qualification requirement for relevant Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card occupations, including Roof Slater, Roof Tiler and Roof Slater and Tiler.

Your assessor will help you confirm the right pathway and explain what evidence you need throughout the qualification.

Completing the appropriate Roofing NVQ Level 2 pathway can meet the qualification requirement for relevant Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card occupations, including Roof Tiler, Roof Slater and Roof Slater and Tiler.

The qualification includes three mandatory units that all learners complete, followed by the units required for your chosen roofing pathway.

The three mandatory units are:

  • Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
  • Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
  • Moving, Handling and Storing Resources in the Workplace

You will then follow the pathway that matches the roofing work you carry out:

  • Roof Tiler
  • Roof Slater
  • Roof Slater and Tiler

Your assessor will help you confirm the correct pathway based on your job and the work you can provide evidence for.

Once qualified, you can use the appropriate Level 2 Roofing Occupations qualification towards the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card for your occupation, subject to meeting the current CSCS requirements.

The Roofing NVQ Level 2 is for people who are carrying out roof slating, tiling or both in a real workplace environment.

You do not have to be a roofer with years of experience, but you must have access to suitable roofing work so that you can demonstrate the skills required for your chosen pathway.

This qualification may be suitable if you:

  • Already work as a roof tiler, roof slater or roof slater and tiler
  • Have practical roofing experience but do not yet hold a recognised qualification
  • Are relatively new to the roofing industry but are already carrying out suitable work under appropriate supervision
  • Are completing roofing work as part of an apprenticeship or other workplace training route
  • Need the appropriate Level 2 qualification for a relevant Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card occupation

This is a workplace-based NVQ rather than a course that teaches roofing from the beginning. If you are completely new to the trade and do not currently have access to roof slating or tiling work, you may need training or employment experience before you can complete the qualification.

Your assessor will check your role and the work you carry out before you enrol to make sure you can complete the required evidence for the Roof Tiler, Roof Slater or Roof Slater and Tiler pathway.

The Roofing NVQ Level 2 consists of three mandatory units that all learners complete, followed by the units required for one of three roofing pathways.

Your pathway should match the roofing work you carry out and can provide workplace evidence for.

Mandatory Units

All learners complete the following three units:

  • Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
  • Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
  • Moving, Handling and Storing Resources in the Workplace

Roofing NVQ Level 2 Pathways

You will follow the pathway that best matches your role:

  • Roof Tiler
  • Roof Slater
  • Roof Slater and Tiler

Roof Tiler Pathway

The Roof Tiler pathway is for people who install tiled roof coverings. Alongside the mandatory units, you will be assessed in:

  • Installing underlay, battens and roofing components in the workplace
  • Installing pre-formed weathering flashings to roofs in the workplace
  • Installing single-lap roof coverings to a variable gauge in the workplace
  • Installing plain tile roof coverings in the workplace

Roof Slater Pathway

The Roof Slater pathway is for people whose work involves installing natural slate roofing. Alongside the mandatory units, you will be assessed in:

  • Installing underlay, battens and roofing components in the workplace
  • Installing pre-formed weathering flashings to roofs in the workplace
  • Installing regular sized natural roof slate to standard roof details in the workplace

Roof Slater and Tiler Pathway

The Roof Slater and Tiler pathway covers people who carry out both tiled and natural slate roofing work.

  • Installing regular sized natural roof slate to standard roof details in the workplace

Your assessor will confirm the correct pathway before you begin and make sure you have access to the roofing work needed to complete the required evidence.

There are no formal academic entry requirements for the Roofing NVQ Level 2, but you must be carrying out suitable roofing work in a real workplace environment.

To complete the qualification, you need to be able to:

  • Carry out roof tiling, roof slating or both, depending on your chosen pathway
  • Work from drawings, specifications or other site instructions where required
  • Demonstrate your practical roofing skills safely on site
  • Provide workplace evidence for the units included in your pathway
  • Have access to enough relevant roofing work for your assessor to assess your competence

You do not need years of roofing experience, and the qualification can be suitable for somebody who is relatively new to the trade. However, it is not a classroom course that teaches roofing from scratch.

If you are completely new to roofing and do not yet have access to roof slating or tiling work, you may need practical training or workplace experience before starting the NVQ.

Before you enrol, Train 4 Growth will check the work you currently carry out to make sure the qualification and pathway are suitable for you.

The Roofing NVQ Level 2 is designed to fit around your normal roofing work, so you can complete the qualification without taking time away from site to attend college.

Most learners complete the qualification within 6 to 12 months, depending on their experience, the roofing work available and how quickly the required evidence can be gathered.

Assessment is based on the work you already carry out. Your assessor will support you through workplace observations, professional discussions and evidence from real roofing projects.

There are no fixed classroom sessions or written exams. Progress is flexible and built around your job and the roofing pathway you are completing.

There is no fixed weekly study requirement for the Roofing NVQ Level 2.

Most of the evidence for your qualification comes from the roofing work you already carry out, so you are not expected to spend a set number of hours each week studying away from site.

You may need some additional time to:

  • Speak with your assessor
  • Provide documents, photos or other workplace evidence
  • Take part in professional discussions
  • Upload or organise evidence for your portfolio

The amount of time needed outside your normal working day will depend on your experience, the work available and how quickly you can gather the required evidence.

Your assessor will help you plan the qualification around your workload and keep the process manageable alongside your normal roofing job.

The Roofing NVQ Level 2 is assessed through the work you already carry out on site. There are no written exams or classroom-based assignments.

Your assessor will use a range of evidence to confirm that you can carry out the required roofing tasks safely and to the correct standard.

Assessment methods can include:

  • Portfolio of Evidence
Photos, site documents, records and other evidence from real roofing projects.
  • Workplace Observations
Your assessor may observe you carrying out roofing work as part of your normal job.
  • Professional Discussions
You will talk through your work, decisions and experience with your assessor.
  • Practical Workplace Evidence
Evidence showing that you can complete the roofing tasks required for your chosen pathway.
  • Witness Testimony
Where appropriate, statements from supervisors or other suitable people may be used to support evidence of your competence.

Your assessor will explain what evidence is needed and help you build your portfolio as you progress through the qualification.
