Upon completion of this Level 3 NVQ, you will be eligible to apply for the blue CSCS card. This not only allows you to access construction sites, but as the blue CSCS certifies your skills as a competent and safe roofer, it will also make you much more attractive to potential employers.
This roofing course consists of three mandatory units, plus three optional pathways to choose from.
The mandatory units are as follows:
- Developing and Maintaining Good Occupational Working Relationships in the Workplace
- Confirming the Occupational Method of Work in the Workplace
- Conforming to General Health, Safety, and Welfare in the Workplace
Students must also choose one of these three pathways:
- Roof Tiler
- Roof Slater
- Roof Slater and Tiler

This qualification is suitable for a wide range of applicants, including:
- New Entrants: Those who are new to the construction industry and are looking to become a roofer.
- Experienced Roofers Without Formal Qualifications: Individuals who have been working as a roofer but don’t have any formal qualifications. This NVQ Level 3 enables them to certify their skills and advance their career.
- Apprentices: Those who have started or are planning to start a roofing apprenticeship. This Level 3 NVQ is a nationally recognised roofing qualification that can complement on-the-job training with essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
- People Seeking Blue CSCS Card: Upon completion of this level 3 NVQ roofing qualification, you will be eligible to apply for the blue CSCS card. This will allow you access to work on building sites and certify that you are a professional and safe worker.
The mandatory units are as follows:

- Developing and Maintaining Good Occupational Working Relationships in the Workplace
- Confirming the Occupational Method of Work in the Workplace

- Roof Slater
- Roof Slater and Tiler

Level 3 NVQ in Roofing Occupations – Pathway 1 – Roof Tiler
Candidates who choose the roof tiler pathway must complete the following units:
- Installing underlay, battens, and roofing components in the workplace
- Installing pre-formed weathering flashings to roofs in the workplace
- Stripping and reclaiming roof coverings in the workplace
- Installing single-lap roof tiles to a fixed gauge in the workplace
- Installing double-lap roof tiles to curved and swept roof details in the workplace
- Installing single and double lap roof tiles to mitred and vertical roof details in the workplace
Level 3 NVQ in Roofing Occupations – Pathway 2 – Roof Slater
Candidates specialising as roof slaters must complete the following units:
- Installing underlay, battens, and roofing components in the workplace
- Installing pre-formed weathering flashings to roofs in the workplace
- Installing double-lap artificial roof slates in the workplace
- Installing natural roof slate to mitred and vertical roof details in the workplace
- Installing random natural roof slates with diminishing margins in the workplace
- Stripping and reclaiming roof coverings in the workplace
Level 3 NVQ in Roofing Occupations – Pathway 3 – Roof Slater and Tiler
Candidates who want to learn skills in both roof slating and roof tiling must complete the following units:<
- Installing underlay, battens, and roofing components in the workplace
- Stripping and reclaiming roof coverings in the workplace
- Installing pre-formed weathering flashings to roofs in the workplace
- Installing single-lap roof tiles to a variable gauge in the workplace
- Installing plain tile roof coverings in the workplace
- Installing double-lap artificial roof slates in the workplace
- Installing natural roof slate to mitred and vertical roof details in the workplace
- Installing random natural roof slates with diminishing margins in the workplace
No Qualifications Needed: You do not need any qualifications to enrol on our Level 3 NVQ in Roofing Occupations. We believe in making education accessible for all.
