Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 3 – Course Overview

The Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 3 is a workplace-based qualification for experienced tilers carrying out specialist wall and floor tiling work.

It is designed for tilers who already have strong practical experience and can demonstrate a higher level of competence through the work they carry out on site.

The qualification covers areas including preparing backgrounds, planning work, tiling wall and floor surfaces and producing tiled, mosaic and stone surface finishes.

Assessment takes place through your real workplace activity. You will need access to suitable tiling work so your assessor can confirm your competence and gather the evidence required for the qualification.

This is not a classroom-based course for beginners or people learning tiling from scratch. You should already be working as an experienced tiler and carrying out work at the level required by the qualification.

Completing the appropriate Level 3 qualification can support progression to the relevant Gold CSCS Skilled Worker Card, subject to the current CSCS qualification, test and application requirements.

The Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 3 is designed for experienced tilers who are already carrying out specialist tiling work in a real workplace environment.

This qualification is not designed for beginners, career changers or people looking to learn tiling from scratch. You need to already be carrying out work at the level required so that your competence can be assessed.

Completing the relevant Level 3 qualification can also support progression to the Gold CSCS card for Wall & Floor Tilers, subject to the current CSCS qualification, test and application requirements.

Your assessor will check your experience, current role and the work available to you before enrolment to make sure the Level 3 qualification is suitable for you.

Yes. The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Wall and Floor Tiling (Construction) is an accepted qualification for the relevant Gold CSCS Skilled Worker Card for Wall & Floor Tilers.

You will also need to meet the current CSCS requirements, including passing the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment test before applying for the card.

The Gold card shows that you hold a recognised Level 3 qualification for the skilled construction occupation you carry out.

The Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 3 consists of seven mandatory units. All seven must be completed to achieve the qualification.

The units cover the practical tiling skills, planning, health and safety and workplace responsibilities you need to demonstrate through your normal work.

Mandatory Units

  • Confirming the Occupational Method of Work in the Workplace
  • Confirming Work Activities and Resources for an Occupational Work Area in the Workplace
  • Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
  • Developing and Maintaining Good Occupational Working Relationships in the Workplace
  • Preparing Backgrounds to Receive Wall and/or Floor Tiling in the Workplace
  • Producing Tiled, Mosaic and Stone Surface Finishes in the Workplace
  • Tiling Wall and Floor Surfaces in the Workplace

Together, these units cover planning and organising tiling work, preparing suitable backgrounds, completing wall and floor tiling and producing specialist tiled, mosaic and stone finishes.

Your assessor will need evidence that you can meet the requirements of each unit consistently in a real workplace environment. Evidence will normally come from your work on live tiling projects, supported by workplace observations and other suitable evidence.

The Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 3 is designed for experienced tilers who are already carrying out suitable specialist tiling work in a real workplace environment.

You do not need to hold the Level 2 tiling NVQ first, but you must already have the practical experience, knowledge and access to work needed to demonstrate competence at Level 3.

Before you enrol, you should be able to show that you:

  • Already work in wall and floor tiling
  • Have strong practical experience in the trade
  • Carry out specialist or more complex tiling work as part of your normal role
  • Can prepare backgrounds and plan tiling work independently
  • Work with tiled, mosaic or stone surface finishes where required
  • Have access to suitable live projects for workplace assessment
  • Can provide evidence of the work you carry out

This qualification is not designed for beginners or people looking to learn tiling from scratch.

You do not have to complete the Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 2 before progressing to Level 3 if your current experience and workplace responsibilities already meet the Level 3 requirements.

The Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 3 is designed to fit around your normal working role. You complete the qualification by demonstrating your competence through the tiling work you already carry out.

Course Length

Most learners complete the qualification within 6 to 12 months. The exact timescale will depend on your experience, the type of tiling work available to you and how quickly the required workplace evidence can be gathered.

Workplace-Based Assessment

Assessment is based on your real work rather than regular classroom attendance. Your assessor will use workplace observations, professional discussions and evidence from live tiling projects to confirm that you meet the requirements of the qualification.

There are no fixed classroom sessions or traditional written exams. Your assessment can be planned around your work and the suitable Level 3 tiling projects available to you.

Weekly Time Commitment

There is no fixed number of study hours required each week. Most of the evidence comes from your normal working role, although you may need some additional time to speak with your assessor, organise evidence and upload documents or photographs to your portfolio.

The amount of time needed outside your normal working day will depend on the evidence available and how quickly you progress through the qualification.

The Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 3 is assessed through the specialist tiling work you carry out in the workplace. There are no traditional written exams or classroom-based assignments.

Your assessor will use different types of evidence to confirm that you meet the requirements of the qualification.

Workplace observations
Your assessor will observe you carrying out suitable tiling work as part of your normal job.

Portfolio of workplace evidence
Photos, site records, job specifications, work records and other evidence from real projects can be used to demonstrate your competence.

Professional discussions
You may discuss your work, methods and decisions with your assessor to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding.

Practical workplace evidence
You will need to provide evidence that you can complete the specialist tiling tasks required by the qualification safely and to the correct standard.

Witness testimony
Where appropriate, statements from supervisors or other suitable people may be used to support evidence of your competence.

Your assessor will explain what evidence is required and help you build your portfolio as you progress through the qualification.

The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Wall and Floor Tiling (Construction) is a recognised workplace qualification for experienced tilers carrying out specialist wall and floor tiling work.

GQA qualification
The qualification is awarded by GQA Qualifications and has qualification number 603/3240/2. It is designed to recognise the skills, knowledge and competence you demonstrate through real workplace activity.

Industry-relevant competence
The qualification covers areas including planning and organising work, preparing backgrounds, tiling wall and floor surfaces and producing tiled, mosaic and stone surface finishes.

Gold CSCS Skilled Worker Card route
The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Wall and Floor Tiling (Construction) is listed by CSCS as an accepted qualification for the Gold CSCS Skilled Worker Card for the Wall & Floor Tiler occupation.

You will also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operatives test within the required timeframe and meet the current CSCS application requirements. The Gold Skilled Worker Card is currently valid for five years.

Workplace competence
Assessment is based on your ability to carry out specialist wall and floor tiling competently in a real working environment, rather than completing a classroom-based training programme.

Completing the Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 3 gives experienced tilers a recognised qualification that reflects specialist competence in the trade.

From here, progression will usually depend on the type of work you take on and whether your responsibilities begin to move beyond tiling itself.

Possible next steps could include:

  • Specialist tiling work – continue developing your experience across more complex wall, floor, mosaic and stone tiling projects.
  • Leading tiling work on site – take on greater responsibility for organising work, coordinating activities and supporting other tilers.
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision – potentially suitable if supervising other workers becomes a genuine part of your normal role.
  • Further site management progression – if your responsibilities develop further into managing teams, site activities or projects, a higher-level construction management qualification may become appropriate.

The right progression route will depend on the work you actually carry out and the level of responsibility you have on site.
