Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 2 – Course Overview

The Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 2 is a workplace-based qualification for people who already carry out tiling work as part of their normal job.

It is designed to recognise competence in fixing tiles to vertical, horizontal and inclined surfaces in both domestic and commercial settings.

The qualification can cover work carried out in places such as kitchens, bathrooms, shops, hotels, offices and restaurants, depending on the type of tiling work you do.

Assessment is based on real workplace activity. You will need to demonstrate your ability to prepare backgrounds, set out and fix tiles correctly, work safely and provide suitable evidence from the tiling work you already carry out.

This is not a classroom-based course for people learning tiling from scratch. You need access to suitable wall and floor tiling work so that your competence can be assessed in the workplace.

Completing the appropriate Level 2 qualification can support progression to the relevant Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card, subject to the current CSCS qualification, test and application requirements.

The Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 2 is designed for people who are already carrying out tiling work in a real workplace and want a recognised qualification that reflects the skills they use on the job.

This qualification may be suitable if you:

  • Already work as a wall and floor tiler
  • Carry out routine tiling work on walls, floors or inclined surfaces
  • Prepare backgrounds and set out tiling work correctly
  • Fix tiles safely and to the required standard
  • Work on domestic or commercial tiling projects
  • Have access to suitable live tiling work for workplace assessment
  • Can provide evidence of the tiling work you carry out

This is not an entry-level course for people learning tiling from scratch. You need to be carrying out suitable wall and floor tiling work so that your competence can be assessed in the workplace.

Employers can also use the qualification to formally recognise the skills of experienced tilers within their team.

Your assessor will check your experience, current role and the work available to you before enrolment to make sure the Level 2 qualification is suitable for you.

The Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 2 is made up of five mandatory units and one optional unit.

Your assessor will check that the units match the tiling work you carry out and help you gather suitable evidence from your workplace.

Mandatory Units

All learners complete the following five units:

  • Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
  • Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
  • Moving, Handling and Storing Resources in the Workplace
  • Preparing Backgrounds for Tiling in the Workplace
  • Tiling Wall and Floor Structures in the Workplace

Optional Units

You must also complete one of the following optional units:

  • Laying Under Tile Heating Systems and Tiling Surfaces in the Workplace
  • Laying Sand and Cement Screeds in the Workplace

The optional unit should reflect the work you actually carry out and can provide suitable workplace evidence for.

Assessment is based mainly on your performance in the workplace. Evidence can include assessor observations, photographs, work records, job specifications, witness testimony and professional discussions where appropriate.

There are no formal academic entry requirements for the Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 2, but you must already be carrying out suitable tiling work in a real workplace environment.

This qualification is designed for working tilers who can demonstrate the practical skills and knowledge required to prepare backgrounds and tile wall and floor surfaces safely and correctly.

Before you enrol, you should be able to show that you:

  • Already carry out wall and floor tiling as part of your normal job
  • Have experience preparing backgrounds for tiling
  • Can set out and fix tiles safely and to the required standard
  • Have access to suitable live tiling work for workplace assessment
  • Can provide evidence of the tiling work you carry out

This qualification is not designed for people who are completely new to tiling or who want to learn the trade from scratch.

The Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 2 is designed to fit around your normal working role rather than requiring regular classroom attendance.

Course Length

Most learners complete the qualification within 6 to 12 months. The exact timescale will depend on your experience, the tiling work available to you and how quickly the required workplace evidence can be gathered.

Workplace-Based Assessment

The qualification is assessed through the wall and floor tiling work you already carry out. Your assessor will use workplace observations, professional discussions and evidence from real projects to confirm your competence.

There are no fixed classroom sessions or traditional written exams. Your assessment can be planned around your job, workload and the tiling work available to you.

Weekly Time Commitment

There is no fixed number of study hours required each week. Most of the evidence comes from your normal work, although you may need some additional time to speak with your assessor, organise evidence and upload documents or photographs to your portfolio.

The amount of time needed outside your normal working day will depend on the evidence available and how quickly you progress through the qualification.

The Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 2 is assessed through the tiling work you already carry out in the workplace. There are no traditional written exams or classroom-based assignments.

Your assessor will use a range of workplace evidence to confirm that you can carry out the required tiling work safely and to the correct standard.

Portfolio of workplace evidence
Photos, site records, job specifications and other evidence from real tiling projects can be used to demonstrate your competence.

Workplace observations
Your assessor may observe you preparing backgrounds, setting out and carrying out wall and floor tiling as part of your normal job.

Professional discussions
You will discuss your work, decisions and experience with your assessor to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding.

Practical workplace evidence
You will provide evidence showing that you can complete the tiling tasks required by the qualification.

Witness testimony
Where appropriate, statements from supervisors or other suitable people may also be used to support evidence of your competence.

Your assessor will explain what evidence is needed and support you in building your portfolio throughout the qualification.

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wall and Floor Tiling (Construction) is a nationally recognised vocational qualification for working tilers.

GQA qualification
The qualification is awarded by GQA Qualifications and has qualification number 610/0051/8. It is designed to recognise competence demonstrated through real wall and floor tiling work in the workplace.

Industry-relevant competence
The qualification covers key areas such as preparing backgrounds, setting out tiling work, fixing tiles to wall and floor surfaces, working safely and handling materials correctly.

Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card route
A relevant Level 2 construction NVQ can support progression to the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card for the appropriate occupation, subject to the current CSCS qualification, test and application requirements.

You will also need to pass the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the required timeframe before applying for the card.

Workplace competence
Assessment is based on your ability to carry out wall and floor tiling safely and competently in a real working environment, rather than simply completing classroom training or written exams.

Yes. Completing the relevant Wall & Floor Tiling NVQ Level 2 can meet the qualification requirement for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card for the appropriate tiling occupation.

You will also need to meet the current CSCS requirements, including passing the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment test before applying for the card.

The Blue Skilled Worker Card shows that you hold a recognised qualification for the skilled construction role you carry out.
