How to Get an NVQ in Plastering Without Going to College

You don’t need to sit in a classroom or go back to college to get qualified as a plasterer. If you’re already working in the trade, you might be able to get your NVQ in Plastering based on the skills you already use every day.

This route is quicker, more flexible, and fully recognised for your CSCS card. Let’s break down exactly how it works.

✅ What Is an NVQ in Plastering?

An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is a work-based qualification that proves you can do your job to industry standard. In plastering, it’s often needed to:

Get a CSCS Skilled Worker (Blue) Card
Work on larger building sites
Move up in your trade or access site supervisor roles

There are different levels available:

Level 2 NVQ in Plastering – For solid experience on the tools, but no formal qualification yet
Level 3 NVQ in Plastering – For advanced plasterers, team leaders, or those working with complex systems

🏗️ Can You Really Get Qualified Without College?

You’ll be assessed while you’re on site – no classroom time, no exams, no time off work.

🧱 How Does the OSAT Route Work?

1. Initial Assessment

We chat with you to confirm your experience and see which NVQ level is right for you.

2. On-Site Observations

One of our assessors visits you on site to watch you at work. They’ll look at things like:

Surface prep
Mixing
Applying plaster
Finishing and snagging
Health & safety practices

3. Work-Based Evidence

You’ll collect photos, videos, method statements, and job sheets to build your portfolio.

4. Professional Discussion

You’ll have a short discussion with your assessor to cover any areas they didn’t see on site.

5. Certification

Once complete, you’ll receive an NVQ certificate – ready to apply for your Blue CSCS Card.
