You organise the team, keep work moving and deal with problems on site. Now you need a qualification to back up your experience.
But which site supervisor NVQ should you choose: Level 3 or Level 4?
The answer starts with your day-to-day responsibilities. Here’s how to work out which qualification fits your job.
What’s the Difference Between a Level 3 and Level 4 Site Supervisor NVQ?
The two qualifications cover different types of supervision. Both recognise the skills and knowledge you use at work.
| Qualification | What you supervise |
|---|---|
| Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision | Work within your own trade or work area. |
| Level 4 Construction Site Supervision | A wider range of site activities, including planning, resources, progress and quality. |
Start with what you actually do each day. Your assessor will check your duties against the requirements of the qualification.
Is a Level 3 Supervisor NVQ Right for You?
If you’re an experienced tradesperson who already leads others in your trade, our NVQ Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision could suit you.
You might organise daily tasks, check materials are ready, explain work methods and make sure your team works safely.
For example, you could be a bricklayer who allocates work to other bricklayers and checks that it meets the required standard. You may still carry out practical work yourself while supervising the team.
You’ll need to show that you can organise and supervise the work, alongside your trade experience.

When Should You Choose NVQ Level 4 Construction Site Supervision?
Our NVQ Level 4 Construction Site Supervision may fit if you already have broader responsibility for how site work is planned and controlled.
You could be organising people, equipment and materials, checking progress against the schedule and dealing with quality issues.
For example, you might coordinate different subcontractors, check that work happens in the right order and sort out delays affecting the next stage.
You’ll need to show how you make decisions and keep work on track. Your assessor will also help identify the pathway that matches the type of construction work you supervise.
Do You Need Level 3 Site Supervision Before Starting Level 4?
You don’t automatically need to complete Level 3 first.
If you already carry out the duties needed for Level 4, you can be considered for that qualification directly.
Before you enrol, we’ll discuss your experience, responsibilities and the evidence you can provide. This helps us check that you have suitable work available to complete the NVQ.
Which NVQ Do You Need for a CSCS Supervisor Gold Card?
Both qualifications can support an application for a CSCS Supervisor Gold Card. The qualification and pathway must match your occupation.
CSCS lists Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision for occupational work supervisors and relevant Level 4 Construction Site Supervision pathways for site supervisor roles.
You’ll normally also need to pass the CITB Specialist Supervisory Health, Safety and Environment test within the two years before you apply.
You apply for your card separately after meeting the requirements. Check the CSCS guidance for your occupation before choosing your qualification.
How Do You Complete Your Site Supervisor NVQ Whilst Working?
Both NVQs are assessed through real supervisory work. You build a portfolio: a collection of evidence showing how you do your job.
This could include work plans, toolbox talk records, quality checks, photographs and statements from people who have seen you work.
Your assessor will observe your work and ask you to explain how you handle tasks and make decisions. You may answer spoken or written questions to show your knowledge.
There are no classroom exams for these NVQs. You’ll have support from your assessor, with evidence gathered around the work you already do.
