The Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment covers the basic safety knowledge needed for construction labouring work.

CSCS Test and Card – What You Need to Know

This Level 1 qualification can be used as part of the application route for the CSCS Labourer Card.

To apply for the card, you will normally need to:

  1. Complete an accepted Level 1 health and safety qualification, such as this course.
  2. Pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operatives test.
  3. Apply for the CSCS Labourer Card using the official CSCS application service.

The CSCS Labourer Card is for people working in labouring occupations only. If you are training for, or already working in, a skilled trade, a different CSCS card may be more suitable for your role.

A CSCS card is not a legal requirement, but many principal contractors and major housebuilders require workers to hold the correct card before allowing them onto site.

A relevant Level 2 NVQ can support progression to the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card for occupations where that is the correct card route. Other occupations may require a different card or qualification level.

You will need to be carrying out suitable work in the relevant occupation so that your competence can be assessed through the NVQ.
