Can This Level 7 NVQ Help Me Become an MCIOB?
Yes. The Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Construction Senior Management meets the requirements for the CIOB Qualified & Experienced Practitioner – N/SVQ Pathway.
This means that if you meet CIOB’s experience criteria, you can apply for Chartered Membership (MCIOB) through the simplified N/SVQ Professional Review pathway.
You do not skip Professional Review entirely — but you do not have to repeat the full competence assessment, because the Level 7 NVQ has already assessed you at that level.
Pursuing MCIOB is optional. The Level 7 NVQ is a nationally recognised qualification in its own right and can be completed without applying for Chartered Membership.
What Are The Requirements To Apply Through The CIOB N/SVQ Pathway To Become an MCIOB?
To apply through the N/SVQ pathway, you must:
- Have at least three years’ construction management experience
- Hold a Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Construction Senior Management
- Have been awarded the qualification within the last three years
- Have been assessed by an assessor who was MCIOB or FCIOB at the time of assessment
- You must also be a CIOB Applicant member before submitting your Professional Review application.
All applications are subject to CIOB approval.
Does Train 4 Growth Meet The CIOB Assessor Requirement For The N/SVQ Pathway?
Yes. Our Level 7 NVQ in Senior Construction Management is assessed by our own MCIOB registered assessor, Richard Pincombe.
CIOB requires the qualification to have been assessed by an MCIOB or FCIOB member in order for candidates to use the N/SVQ pathway.
Because our assessor is MCIOB registered, eligible candidates can confidently use this qualification to support their Chartered Membership application.
Does Completing the Level 7 NVQ in Senior Construction Management Automatically Make Me an MCIOB?
No. Chartered Membership is never automatic. After completing the Level 7 NVQ, you must still:
- Apply for Chartered Membership through CIOB
- Submit the required Professional Review documentation
- Meet the experience requirements
- Receive approval from CIOB
The difference is that under the N/SVQ pathway, the Professional Review is simplified. You do not have to complete the full competence submission normally required through the standard route.
How Long Does It Take To Become MCIOB Chartered?
Because the Professional Review is streamlined for Level 7 NVQ holders, the process can be shorter than the standard route.
In some cases, eligible candidates achieve Chartered status in as little as three months after applying — subject to CIOB timelines and approval.
What Would MCIOB Mean For You?
Becoming a MCIOB shows that your experience and competence have been formally recognised by the Chartered Institute of Building.
It allows you to:
- Use the title Chartered Construction Manager or Chartered Builder
- Add recognised professional status alongside your Level 7 qualification
- Strengthen your credibility with clients, employers and senior stakeholders
- Support progression into higher-level leadership or consultancy roles
For some people, it’s about personal achievement. For others, it’s about professional recognition.
If you’re working towards Chartered status, this Level 7 NVQ provides a recognised route to apply for MCIOB through the CIOB N/SVQ pathway.
