Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision – Course Overview

The Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision is for people who already take charge of teams and day-to-day site activity.

If you plan, organise, and make sure work gets done safely, this qualification recognises your experience.

Completing this NVQ makes you eligible for the CSCS Supervisor Gold Card – proof that you’re competent to lead others and uphold safety and quality on construction sites.

You’ll complete the qualification through workplace assessment. There are no classroom exams, just evidence gathered from the job you already do, supported by an experienced assessor who guides you throughout.

This qualification is aimed at people who organise and supervise work on construction sites.

You’ll be planning and controlling methods of work, allocating equipment, personnel and materials, checking quality, and keeping communication clear between everyone involved.

Level 4 NVQs are for those who are already trained and experienced across a broad range of site activities.

You’ll be expected to show that you take responsibility for decisions, manage others effectively, and handle problems that come up on site.

You’ll also need to demonstrate knowledge of health and safety legislation, team leadership, and maintaining high standards of workmanship.

Because construction sites vary so much, not all supervisors will do the same tasks. This NVQ is built to reflect that. It’s divided into six pathways so you can follow the one that matches your type of work:

  • Building and Civil Engineering
  • Highways Maintenance
  • Residential Development
  • Traditional and Heritage Building
  • Tunnelling
  • Retrofit

It’s a flexible structure that allows you to build evidence around the real work you do.

The NVQ is completed on site while you work. You’ll collect evidence – plans, schedules, risk assessments, photos, meeting notes, or witness statements – and upload them to your online portfolio. Your assessor will review your evidence and visit your site to observe you in action.

You’ll need to show consistent performance and knowledge across all required units. Evidence must come mainly from real workplace activity.

Types of evidence:

  • Observation by your assessor on site.
  • Supporting materials such as:
    • Accident or safety reports
    • Photos or videos of work stages
    • Work diaries and timesheets
    • Job specifications, drawings, or delivery records
    • Toolbox talk notes or meeting minutes
    • Witness testimonies from colleagues or clients
    • Training records or correspondence

Quantity of evidence:

Your portfolio should prove you can meet the standards repeatedly over time, not just once. The aim is to show consistent, safe, and effective supervision in real conditions.
