The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Interior Systems is a work-based qualification for people who are working in interior systems, including those early in their career, and want a recognised qualification for the work they carry out on site.

This qualification covers interior systems work such as dry lining, installing plasterboard, partition systems, and ceiling installation, including suspended ceilings. It confirms that work is carried out safely, correctly, and in line with industry standards.

This is not a classroom-based course. Although learners may be at an early stage in their role, the NVQ itself is assessed in the workplace. Evidence must come from real site work, making this qualification suitable for both individual workers and employers who want to formally recognise site-based skills.

This NVQ Level 2 drylining qualification is designed around real construction work, not classroom training.

  • Nationally recognised Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Interior Systems
  • Suitable for dry lining, partitioning, and ceiling installation roles
  • Assessment takes place in the workplace
  • No classroom attendance required for the NVQ itself
  • Supports applications for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card
  • You can choose the pathway that matches your role
This qualification is suitable for people who are carrying out interior systems work on site, including those who are new to the role but already working under supervision.

It is suitable for:

  • Dry liners carrying out fixing and installation work
  • Workers installing plasterboard linings
  • Operatives involved in suspended ceiling training and installation
  • Interior systems installers working with partitions
  • Employers looking to qualify staff who are active on site

This Level 2 NVQ is often used by dry liners and suspended ceiling fitters who are developing their skills.

Learners do not need years of experience, but they must be carrying out relevant tasks in a real working environment so evidence can be gathered for assessment.

All learners complete mandatory units that cover essential site knowledge and safe working practices.

Mandatory units completed by all learners:

  • Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
  • Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace

  • Moving, Handling and Storing Resources in the Workplace

These units focus on working safely, following site procedures, handling materials correctly, and maintaining productive working practices.

After the mandatory units, learners complete a pathway based on the work they are actually carrying out on site:

  • Pathway 1 – Modular Demountable Partitioning

This pathway is used when your day-to-day work includes setting out and installing modular demountable partitions, working to drawings and site layouts.

  • Pathway 2 – Operable Partition Systems

This pathway suits roles that include installing, adjusting, or relocating operable partition systems, following manufacturer instructions and site drawings.

  • Pathway 3 – Not Currently Available

Pathways are set by the awarding body, and pathway 3 is no longer offered as part of this qualification.

  • Pathway 4 – Dry Lining Fixing (Dry Lining Course Route)

This pathway is suitable for you if your day-to-day site work is focused on fixing boards and installing dry lining systems, rather than partitions or operable systems.

    Both units are required:

    • Install dry lining systems
    • Install plasterboard linings
There are no formal entry qualifications for this ceiling fitting and dry lining course. However, learners must have authorised access to a construction site where they can prove their skills.

You should:

  • Have access to a site where interior systems tasks are carried out
  • Be working, or about to be working, in an interior systems role
  • Be able to demonstrate your work for assessment
  • Work well under supervision where required

This qualification is not suitable for learners with no site access, as all assessment evidence must come from real workplace activity.

If you don’t currently have site access, our guide to getting a CSCS Green Card explains the quickest route to getting on site and starting your NVQ.

The qualification is completed alongside your normal site work.

  • Total Qualification Time (TQT): 420 hours
  • Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 234 hours
  • Typical completion time: 6–12 months

There is no fixed timetable. Evidence is gathered over time while you continue working on site.

Assessment is evidence-based and carried out in your workplace.

Evidence may include:

  • On-site observations by an assessor
  • Photographic or video evidence of work
  • Job records and site documentation
  • Professional discussions
  • Witness testimonies from supervisors
  • Health and safety records
  • Training records and feedback

Evidence must show that you can carry out tasks safely, correctly, and consistently over time.

If you’re not sure how the application process works, our guide to applying for a CSCS card walks you through it step by step.
