Course Overview

This course introduces the concepts of mental illness and mental health challenges affecting children and young people, highlighting the profound impact these issues can have.

It provides in-depth coverage of various mental health conditions seen in young people and outlines how these conditions can be identified and addressed. Topics include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, and self-harm, as well as eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating.

Additional mental health conditions covered in this course include schizophrenia, autism, learning difficulties, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, panic disorder, sleep apnoea, and social phobia.

Participants will gain insight into the symptoms, causes, and appropriate actions to take if they suspect a child or young person may have a mental health condition. We’ll explore the roles of mental health professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, and clinical social workers, and the ways in which parents can actively engage in their child’s mental health journey.

The course will cover a variety of treatment approaches, such as psychotherapy, mindfulness, play therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and medication where appropriate. It also addresses the prognosis and prevention of mental health issues, along with methods for promoting positive mental well-being and dispelling common myths.

In addition, you’ll learn practical techniques to help you engage with children or young people about their mental health in a supportive and effective manner.
