This course is suitable if you are stepping up into a site management role or already acting as a construction or building site manager on site.
To complete the qualification, your role must include:
- Managing people, subcontractors, or site teams
- Taking responsibility for planning and coordinating site activities
- Providing real workplace evidence from live projects
You do not need to be a fully established site manager to enrol, but this qualification is not suitable for new starters or those working purely in a trade or supervisory role.
It is designed for experienced workers who are already managing sites or moving into full site management responsibility.
Most learners complete the course within 6 to 12 months
- Assessment takes place on site
- Flexible pace to fit around your job
- Assessor support throughout the qualification
There are no exams and no classroom tasks. You do not need to prepare any evidence before enrolling on the course. Evidence is collected gradually as part of your normal site management role.
Assessment methods include:
- Portfolio of workplace evidence
- On-site observations
- Professional discussions with your assessor
- Photos, site documents, and site records
Your assessor will guide you through the process from the start. They will explain what evidence is needed, how to collect it, and when it should be submitted, so you’re not expected to know this in advance.
The aim is to keep assessment practical, clear, and manageable alongside full-time site management work.
The CSCS Black Card is commonly required for site managers working on:
- Large construction projects
- Retrofit and compliance-driven work
- Public sector or regulated sites
Once you’ve completed the qualification, you can follow the full process for applying for your CSCS card based on your role and qualification.
The qualification is awarded by GQA Ofqual, which means it meets national standards and is properly quality-checked. It is supported by NOCN Group and recognised b CITB as an appropriate qualification for construction site management roles.
In practical terms, this confirms that the NVQ reflects what construction site managers are actually expected to do on live construction and retrofit projects — managing people, programmes, quality, costs, and health and safety.
For employers, it shows that site managers have been assessed in a real working environment. For individuals, it provides a nationally recognised qualification that supports progression into higher-level management roles and eligibility for the CSCS Black Card on sites where a manager-level card is required
Some employers and learners may be able to access support through the following routes:
CITB Grants
May be available for eligible employers registered with CITB and paying the CITB levy.
Local Authority Skills Funds
Funding varies by local authority and region, and availability depends on local priorities.
Warm Homes Skills Programme
Linked to retrofit, energy efficiency, and low-carbon work, with funding available through specific projects.
Funding availability and eligibility can change and is not guaranteed. Any funding applications or eligibility checks should be made directly with the relevant funding body or employer.
You may progress to:
