This NVQ plastering qualification is fully work-based – there are no classroom days or written exams. You’ll collect evidence as you work, with help from an assessor who visits your site.

As long as you’re regularly doing plastering tasks—like surface preparation, mixing, applying coatings, or installations—this NVQ Level 2 plastering is for you.

You’ll complete mandatory and optional units based on your pathway:

Mandatory Units (Group A): (10 Credits Total)

  • Conforming to General Health, Safety & Welfare in the Workplace (Level 1 – 2 credits)
  • Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace (Level 2 – 3 credits)
  • Moving, Handling & Storing Resources in the Workplace (Level 2 – 5 credits)

Solid‑Basic Pathway:

  • Mandatory Unit: Applying Finishing Plaster to Background Surfaces (Level 2 – 18 credits)
  • Optional Units (minimum 11 credits): Internal solid plaster finishes, external render finishes, installing direct-bond dry liners, projection plaster, screeds, mechanically fixed plasterboard, or repairs.

Solid‑Full Pathway:

  • Mandatory Units: Internal solid finish + external render (Level 2 – 44 credits)
  • Optional Units: As above, additional internal or dry-lining work.

Fibrous Pathways:

  • Mandatory Units: Positioning and securing fibrous components, repairing fibrous plaster (Level 2 – 27 or 44 credits depending on pathway)
  • Optional Units: Producing fibrous plaster components

Each pathway reflects different specialisms, and you choose your route based on the type of plastering you do.

For this plastering course, assessment happens while you work on actual jobs. Your assessor collects:

  • Site observations
  • Job plans, risk assessments, and method statements
  • Photos and videos of your work
  • Witness statements from a site manager or tutor
  • Conversations to check your understanding

You don’t need to do any exams or coursework—it’s all practical evidence, showing you meet national trade standards.

After completing this NVQ Level 2 plastering qualification, you can apply for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card.

This card shows you’re fully qualified and ready for recognised plastering roles. It often opens the door to better pay and more advanced plastering contracts.

Most people complete this plastering training within about 6 to 12 months—depending on your workload, experience, and how quickly you gather evidence.
