CITB Grants and NVQ Funding Support

If you or your employer are registered with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), you may be eligible to claim funding of up to £600 per NVQ through their grants and funding scheme. This can significantly reduce the overall cost of completing your qualification.

Understanding CITB Grant Amounts for NVQs

If you or your employer are registered with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and are up-to-date with your levy returns, you may be eligible to claim significant grant funding upon the achievement of your NVQ. The amount you can claim varies depending on the NVQ level and the specific qualification, reflecting the skills needed across the industry.

We’re happy to provide support and documentation to assist with your CITB claim if required.

Important information:

  • The CITB scheme is not a partnership programme – Train 4 Growth cannot claim on your behalf.
  • You or your employer will need to submit your own grant claim to CITB once the qualification is completed.
  • The amount you can claim depends on the NVQ level and the specific qualification.

How to Claim Your CITB Grant: A Simple Guide

Securing your CITB grant is a straightforward process, but it’s important to understand the steps involved. Remember, the grant is paid directly by CITB to the eligible employer, not to Train 4 Growth. Our team is here to support you with the necessary documentation to make your claim as smooth as possible.

Here’s a step-by-step overview of the typical CITB grant claim process:

  1. Ensure Employer Eligibility & Compliance:
    • CITB Registration: Confirm that your employer is registered with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
    • Levy Returns: Crucially, ensure your employer is up-to-date with their annual CITB Levy Returns. Missing the Levy Return deadline can block access to grants.
  2. Complete Your NVQ Qualification with Train 4 Growth:
    • Successfully undertake and achieve your chosen NVQ qualification through Train 4 Growth. Our flexible training options allow you to complete your NVQ around your work schedule.
  3. Receive Documentation from Train 4 Growth:
    • Once your NVQ is successfully completed and certified, we will provide you (or your employer) with all the necessary documentation, including your NVQ certificate, which is essential evidence for your grant claim.
  4. Employer Submits the Grant Claim to CITB:
    • Your employer, or their designated contact, will need to submit the grant claim directly to CITB. This is typically done via the CITB Online Portal (my.citb.co.uk). They will need to log in, navigate to the “Grants” section, and follow the instructions for “Qualification Achievement” grants.
    • Important: Claims usually need to be submitted within 52 weeks of the NVQ achievement date. Don’t delay!
  5. Receive Funding Directly from CITB:
    • Upon successful verification of the claim by CITB, the grant funds will be paid directly to your employer’s nominated bank account. Payments are generally processed within a few weeks of the claim being authorised.

Train 4 Growth Support: While your employer is responsible for the claim submission, we are committed to helping you by:

  • Providing clear guidance on the required documentation.
  • Ensuring your achievement data is accurately recorded for CITB verification.
  • Answering any questions you may have about the process from our end.

For detailed instructions and to access the claim portal, please visit the official CITB website.

NVQ Funding FAQ’s

Once your employer has successfully submitted the grant claim to CITB with all necessary documentation (including your NVQ certificate provided by us), grants are typically processed and paid within 28 days. Delays can occur if information is missing or incorrect, so ensuring accurate submission is key.
No, CITB grants are only available to employers who are registered with CITB and are up-to-date with their annual Levy Returns. If your employer is not registered but carries out construction work, they may be eligible and should contact CITB to explore registration. Small employers who are exempt from paying the levy can still be eligible for grants if registered.

As a self-employed individual, you cannot directly claim CITB grants for your own training. CITB grants are paid to the employer. However, if you are a labour-only subcontractor working for a CITB-registered company, that company may be able to claim the grant for your NVQ on your behalf, provided they are up-to-date with their levy and include you in their relevant employment figures. We recommend discussing this with the main contractor you work for.

Yes, you can claim grants for multiple NVQ achievements. CITB typically allows up to four achievements at each level per individual, for approved qualifications. For example, an individual could achieve multiple Level 2 NVQs in different trades and claim grants for each. Specific plant-related VQ units also have separate grant allowances.

CITB grant claims for qualification achievements must generally be submitted within 52 weeks (one year) of the NVQ achievement date (the date on your certificate). It’s crucial to submit claims promptly to avoid missing out on funding.

Missing the annual CITB Levy Return deadline (which is 30 June each year for the preceding tax year’s payroll) can significantly impact grant eligibility. If the return is not submitted by the initial deadline, grant payments may be withheld. If it’s still not submitted by a later final deadline (typically in November of the same year), eligibility for all grant claims can be lost for that levy period. Staying compliant is essential for accessing grants.

While Train 4 Growth cannot submit the claim on your employer’s behalf (as it’s an employer-direct process with CITB), we provide crucial support. We ensure you receive all the necessary documentation, including your NVQ certificate, required for the claim. We are also happy to guide your employer on what evidence is needed and where to find information on the CITB portal.

Yes, depending on your age, location, and the qualification, other funding routes may be available. These can include:

  • Adult Skills Fund (ASF) / Adult Education Budget (AEB): For individuals aged 19+ looking to gain their first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification.
  • Free Courses for Jobs (FCFJ): For adults aged 19+ to get a first full Level 3 qualification in specific priority sectors.
  • 19+ Advanced Learner Loans: A government loan to help cover the costs of qualifications at Level 3 to 6.
  • Apprenticeship Levy: For large employers to fund apprenticeship training, and often with significant government contributions for smaller employers. We recommend contacting us to discuss your specific circumstances and explore all potential funding avenues.
